This probably one of my darkest stories, yet I adored writing this dark, high/epic history based fantasy takes place in a world called “Mutenkyo”, inspired by Ancient civilizations such as Ancient Egypt, Babylonia, Assyria, Illyria as well as the Hittites and Mitanni but also various Oriental cultures. I also dismissed common theme of an eternal battle between Good and Evil, so the battles and wars fought in the story are the result of the character’s moral ambiguity and ethical dilemmas, ensemble of characters with sometimes sympathetic, often imperfect motives who have the capacity to do both good and evil like we can in real life. As said before this a extremely explicit story that does detailed descriptions of sex and violence… make no mistake the reader will read about death, torture and rape.
Also important theme is religion, which for me was rather hard as I am agnostic atheist myself… yet I added several competing religions (based real religious systems) in the story to make it more realistic. For Example in Konoha the most prominent religion is the Will of Fire, which was originally Senju. In contrast to people of Uzushio and Chigiri who worship a pantheon of aquatic deities as they live on island or archipelago.
While the Curse of Hatred and the Three Heavenly Siblings are practiced/worshiped by the Uchiha as they do not exclusively identify themselves as adherents of a single religion but rather, they incorporate elements of various religions in a syncretic fashion. Similar how most of the Japanese people do not exclusively identify themselves as adherents of a single religion; rather, they incorporate elements of various religions in a syncretic fashion known as Shinbutsu shūgō (神仏習合 amalgamation of kami and buddhas)
In turn religion has a certain effect on inheritance issues, Clans who solely follow the Will of Fire practice either a male-preference cognatic or a agnatic-cognatic primogeniture should their be no (living) male heirs and some clans even combine the two primogenitures. The Clans that continue follow the Old Ways before Senju united the Clans are the Uchiha, Hyūga, Yamanaka and Inuzuka. The first three have a absolute cognatic primogeniture, with the eldest child inheriting regardless of gender. The Inuzuka are the sole clan that practices matriarchy and thus have a matrilineal primogeniture. Taking it a step further while the Clans of Konoha practice primogeniture, the clans found in Chigiri and Uzushio practice ultimogeniture.
Other important but sensitive plots are for example the fraternal polyandry found in the Uchiha Clan or the ritual cannibalism as well marriage by capture of the Inuzuka Clan.
